I think it is a truly wonderful movie. It is a littel rough around the edges and the comic relief element i poorly handled and throws off the pacing, but you can really see what a talented filmaker Craven was in this one. And once the scene in the woods starts this film just doesn't let up. This one's got a kick like a mule, and you won't soon forget that you've seen it. Unfortunately, there are quite a few edited prints of this film out there and depending on which one you see, you may not even be able to understand why this film is so intense and shocking. The unedited print is pretty strong stuff indeed.
And the film has a very powrful non-violence message in which the revenge sought by the parents ultimately proves to be an utterly empty and unfulfilling gesture. And the violence has a dehumanizing effect on Krug and his gang, not just Mari and Phyllis. This is one of the greatest horror films ever made

Yea definitely. David Hess's character was so cruel and unrelenting in this film. I agree that the comic relief doesn't really work at all with the film, and some of the editing towards the end really makes you say "What the fuck?"
