Directed by: Ruggero Deodato Made in: 1980
Synopsis: A New York anthropologist, named Professor Harold Moore (Robert Kerman), travels to the wild, inhospitable jungles of South America with two local guides to find out what happened to a documentary film crew which disappeared nearly a year earlier while traveling into the same jungle, called the 'Green Inferno' to film a documentary about reputed cannibal tribes. After a long search and encountering a few primitive tribes, Professor Moore finds the remains of the crew and several reels of their undeveloped film. Upon returning to the USA, Professor Moore views the film in detail featuring the travels of the director Alan Yates (Gabriel York), his assistant Faye Daniels (Francesa Ciardi), and cameramen Jack Anders (Perry Pirkanen) and Mark Tomaso (Luca Giorgio Barbareschi) venturing into the jungles where the inexperienced, street-wise film group, after finding the indigenous tribes to docile for their film, decide to push them for kicks, with drastic consequences. Originally released in 1980, Cannibal Holocaust was banned in about 60 countries around the world inluding its native Italy. The special effects were so well done that the director Ruggero Deodato was even summoned to court to prove that no human being was actually killed in the film. Today the film has a strong cult following and is still one of the most notorious movies to date. Several imitations have been made to cash in on the success of Cannibal Holocaust (the most successful being Cannibal Ferox), but none have succeeded, because not only does the film have plenty of gore and disturbing images to throw at your face it also has a well written plot.
If you are getting tired of the old mainstream horror crap that has been coming out lately or you just think you need to see somthing more schocking, then Cannibal Holocaust is definitely a film you will want to pick up right away. The film had actually been unavailable for a long period of time in the U.S. except for its Laser Disc release in the 90's. It was available in the U.K. heavily edited under the release company Vipco, but you could however order the uncut EC version. Anyways you don't have to worry about that anymore, because Grindhouse has finally released a fully restored 2 disc limited (11,111 copies) edition set. There is also a regular 2 disc set out by Grindhouse that is the same, only it is not limited edition. Well once you get your hands on it you will have plenty of surprises waiting inside. You will get to see the iconic image of a woman impaled on a stake, babies being buried in the mud, and people being eaten. Those are only a few things of what you will see in Cannibal Holocaust. The movie is a very disturbing one at that, and if you are use to watching Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Final Destination ect., then get ready to have a shotgun blast to your senses, because this is the ultimate horror/exploitation film. Thanx man. lol.....Yea thats how I got to when I was first reading up on this film, but if you have read up on it quite a bit then whenever you choose to see it you should be atleast a little prepared already. I can say it is not the most disgusting film I have ever seen, but definitely one of the most well made for its kind. It's probably one of my favorite films and the score by Riz Ortalini in the opening sequences is just so amazing that you have to hear it for yourself.

I really want to see this movie.
I can stand the animal scenes, so I should be fine.

Yea if you can stand the animal scenes you should be pretty good. I should have mentioned those scenes in my review. There is also about a minute or less of real people being executed in the Last Road To Hell Footage. I just wanna put that out there too so people know. I highly recommend this film to anyone up for watching it and the 2 disc release by Grindhouse on DVD is great! It comes with tons of extra features and even a documentary on Cannibal Holocaust.

This is a really terrific movie. I highly recommend seeing it, as it is very powrful and upsetting. The animal scnes are wholly inapropriate and oput of place, and they are detrimental to teh movie overall IMHO, but the film is still worth seeing anyway. BTW, the grindhouse release has an animal cruelty free option, and I usually watch the film that way now that I've seen it in its entirety a few times

This is a truly great movie!!!!!! The animal killing is really disturbing, and most of the non-animal gore is really well done. The story is totally unique, and the brutal mockumentary angle it plays works well. It gets most of it's attention for being violent, which kinda sucks because it distracts people from the fact that the movie itself is great. It gives us a biting commentary (pun intended ) on the media and raises questions about man's inhumanity to man. The fact that it actually has something to say sets this movie apart from other genre films from that time. Great movie.

Absolutely right. And the whole lost video footage angle lends a lot more credibility to some of the footage. It is a brilliant way for a low budget film to disguise and explain some of the limitations of the budget. THat is probably why Blair Witch stile the idea from this movie and ran with it too

I liked how the movie was though to be so real that the crew was arrested and had to prove it was all FX.

Since this was made, probably yea. But Salo which was made 5 years earlier is more shocking.

Yea thats the only one I have seen. His other films are supposed to be very good, but very less graphic. I think thats a good thing though because I don't know how many movies I could handle seeing like Salo.
